Study in Greenland
Grab your opportunity today and book your vacancy without fear or fret! This country has a good number of higher education institutions including some large universities. The public ones are relatively cheaper in terms of tuition, even for foreign students a fact that puts to shame the way the system operates in many countries, where fees are an obstacle that prevents people from less wealthy families from continuing their academics. Greenland has decided to avail education to all nationalities!
Greenland’s far north location offers visitors a unique opportunity to gaze upon the Northern Lights and the midnight sun, kayak past glaciers and fish for Arctic char in pristine waters yet to be touched by fishing poles. Some of the world’s biggest fin whales frolic along the coasts, while many of Greenland’s surprisingly various mountains boast some of the world’s most challenging climbing experiences.
As Greenland has no official property laws, foerigners are free to roam wherever they please without fear of trespassing. However, guided hikes are helpful in making sure foreigners do not venture too far off the beaten path in search of things to do. Dog sledding and snowmobiling are the two most popular ways to travel across the territory with no rail or road networks.
A quarter of Greenland’s residents live in the territory’s biggest city and capital, Nuuk. Danish missionary Hans Egede colonized the area on his 1721 search for raimnents of the Viking colony Erik the Red founded in southern Greenland around the year 1000. Although the Brattahlio was mysteriously abandoned about 5 centuries later, its ruins rank among Greenland’s top attractions.

About Greenland
Greenland is a country where the east meets the west. All the delights of the orient and the nuances of the west connect in this interesting nation that has an immensely rich history. The cultures blend but do not clash. Instead, they form their own identities that are completely distinct, making for fascinating exploration as you peel back the layers of this modernly reclusive nation. Keep reading our RocApplyguides for more insight!
Shortly after WWII, the United States of America offered to purchase Greenland from Denmark for US $100 million. Denmark, which has governed over the world’s largest island for at least five centuries, refused. Today, this far northern territory is geographically near to Canada than Europe, but uniquely combines ancient Inuit traditions with modern technology.
Greenland, who didn’t even have its own TV station until 1982 now boasts more than one cell phone per person for each of its 57k residents, 93 percent of whom have regular Internet access. Despite these modern conveniences, many of the locals still travel primarily by dogsled and hunt as their ancestors have done for centuries.
The main draw still remains its vast wilderness encoumpassed with bodies of water untouched by fishermen, pristine glaciers drifting from the imposing Ilulissat Icefjord and simple hot springs where visitors can warm up from Greenland’s often freezing temperatures. Special permits are mandatory to visit Northeast Greenland National Park, the biggest on the planet, but visitors are free to explore the other 75 percent of the territory without official property laws.
Greenlandic accommodations, like nearly everything else in this seperated territory, do not come cheap. If you want authentic, Kangerlussuaq’s Hotel Arctic is a traditional igloo built each winter, complete with ice tunnels, ice-ware and even an ice bar. Among the more affordable accommodations are South Greenland sheep farming stations, seamen’s homes, cabins throughout the region, and Nuuk’s hostel program, where residents rent out rooms in their homes for a third of what a hotel would cost.
Greenland may be geographically near Canada, but reaching this isolated area is still a challenge. Neither of Greenland’s two largest airports, Kangerlussuaq or Narsarsuaq provide direct flights to North America. The most frequent connections are through Copenhagen or Reykjavik.
Air and water are the two main ways to get around, being that there’s no rail network and very few roads due to the rugged terrain. Norway’s Hurtigruten is the most well known of many cruise lines and ferries which port at Greenland’s coast in the summer. Dogsleds and snowmobiles, not buses and cars, are Greenland’s 2 most popular land transportation options.
About Greenland's Economy
The knowledge of economic performance for a given country can serve a long way in choosing which country to pick for a semester abroad! To this aid, we have made sure you keep well-informed through our Greenland Economy guide what entails domestic and foreign income here. The information is overall but you may need to read more on the reviews from trusted sources to gain a deeper understanding of the economic performance.
Greenland’s economy relies on exports of shrimp and fish, and on a substantial subsidy from the Danish Government. Fish account for over 90 percent of its exports, subjecting the economy to price fluctuations. The subsidy from the Danish Government is budgeted to be about $535 million in 2017, more than 50% of government revenues, and 25% of GDP.
The economy is blossoming after a period of decline. In 2016 the economy grew 4.6% compared to 1.1% in 2015 and negative growth in the years 2013-14. For 2017 the economy is expected to continue to expand at a more subdued rate. The expansion has been catapulted by larger quotas for shrimp, the predominant Greenlandic export, and also by increased activity in the construction sector, especially in Nuuk, the capital.
Private consumption and ecotourism also are contributing to GDP growth more than in previous years. Tourism in Greenland has grown annually around 20% in 2015 and 2016, largely a result of increasing numbers of cruise lines now operating in Greenland's western and southern waters during the apex summer tourism season.
The public sector, including publicly owned firms and the municipalities, plays a dominant role in Greenland's economy. During the last decade the Greenland Home Rule Government pursued conservative fiscal and monetary policies, but public demand has increased for better schools, health care, and retirement systems. The budget was in deficit in 2014 and 2016, but public debt remains low at about 5% of GDP. The government plans a balanced budget for the 2017–20 period.
Significant challenges face the island, including low levels of proffesional labor, geographic dispersion, lack of industry diversification, the long-term sustainability of the public budget, and a declining population due to emigration. Hydrocarbon exploration has ceased with falling oil prices. The island has potential for natural resource exploitation with rare-earth, uranium, and iron ore mineral projects proposed, but its icy terrain and lack of infrastructure offset development.
The 2013 export in Greenland amounts to app. €366 mio. with the main part (88 %) being fish and shellfish, making the Greenlandic economy fragile to international price fluctuations. In 2013 almost 47% of Greenland’s export came from cold water shrimp, 26 percent from halibut and 15% from other fish (namely cod and crabs). In 2013, 2% of the export derived from mining containing mainly gold and olivine.
