About Suriname
In a continent infested with such famous names as Brazil, Argentina, Venezuela and Chile, Suriname; the third smallest country in South America – is often overlooked.
This is quite unfortunate as this little country has a massive deal on offer. From its breathtaking and a lot of natural environment to its exciting and diverse culture, this little territory is well worth a second glance.
Many of the activities on list to tourists are based in the country’s expansive natural environment. Almost one third of Suriname is densely covered in national parks simply waiting to be enjoyed.
From experiencing the myriad of different animal and bird species in a national reserve to taking a dip in the country’s cooling and clear waters, Suriname is an outdoor-lover’s dream.
There are, however, also many picks in the country which involve learning more about the land’s history and culture. Such learning can be achieved in many ways but is often most fun when felt firsthand.
Whether living with indigenous people, or interacting with them at native gatherings, there are plenty of opportunities for travelers to immerse themselves in the culture.
Suriname is a geographically awesome country and home to a plethora of national parks and nature reserves. There are also many beautiful bodies of water which are great for travelers interested in water sports and other connected activities.
The country’s neighbors, which include Guyana, French Guiana and Brazil, are all appealing in their own rights are could definitely also be visited while on the continent.
The climate here is very tropical, and characterized by hot, humid, rainy weather. Despite the generally high temperatures throughout the year, cool trade winds often keep the air at a comfortable temperature.
There re two rainy seasons in Suriname, the first of which is shorter and less intense, lasting from December to January. The second lasts bit longer and often results in heavier precipitation - that lasts from April to August.
The optimal time to visit is between the rainy seasons, when the precipitation lessens and the temperature gets a little higher.
Traveling around Suriname is relatively easy if travelers are content with quite rustic modes of transport. Car rental companies are present in the country but the charges are rather expensive and thus rentals are not the most popular way of getting around.
There are many taxi services in cities but very few to get from one city another. The only way to make overland intercity journeys is by bus as there’re no train lines in the country. There are both private and government bus companies but most buses are often quite overcrowded.
About the Suriname's Economy
The knowledge of economic performance for a given country can serve a long way in choosing which country to pick for a semester abroad!

The country’s economy is dependent on mineral resources, mainly oil, gold, and bauxite, from which alumina (used in the smelting of aluminum metal) is manufactured.
Aside from natural resources, the chief sources of income are from agriculture and remittances, mostly from the Netherlands, French Guiana, and the United States of America.
Suriname is a member of the Caribbean Community, an organization of Caribbean countries and dependencies.
Less than one percent of Suriname’s land is arable, and about half of this is cultivated. Most of the farmland is on the New Coastal Plain. In this region drainage is important most of the year, owing to a surplus of precipitation.
During dry periods evaporation exceeds precipitation, and thus irrigation is effected.
More than half of the cultivated land in Suriname is cltivated with rice, the basic food staple. There are two rice harvests every year the principal one in the spring and a second crop in the autumn.
Some rice is exported, as are bananas, citrus fruits, coconuts, and palm oil. Sugar, coffee, and cocoa, formerly important export products, are produced mainly for domestic consumption.
Because more than nine-tenths of Suriname is forested, great timber resources are found there, but they have not been fully exploited. Plywood and timber are exported. There is a small fishing industry, centred in Paramaribo, that exports take to North America.
Bauxite is the leading mineral in Suriname, with mines near Paranam and Overdacht. Gold mining has grown in vitality. Reserves of chromium, clay, copper, diamonds, iron ore, manganese, nickel, platinum, and tin are also found in Suriname.
The major industry in Suriname is the mining and processing of bauxite. There are an aluminum smelter and an alumina refinery in Paranam. Apart from the bauxite and wood-processing industries, production is limited to small import-substitution enterprises.
Processed foods, clothing, cigarettes, and construction material are produced for the domestic market.
Local banks and insurance firms either are subsidiaries of or cooperate with foreign companies, mostly from the Netherlands and the United States.
Monetary policy is controlled by the minister of finance and the president of the Central Bank of Suriname (established 1957), the bank of issue. The official currency here is the Suriname dollar, which replaced the guilder in 2004.
