About Nepal
Mystical Nepal straddles in the towering Himalaya Mountains on the roof of the world, sharing its wild landscape with eight of the tallest peaks on earth including the infamous Mount Everest.
A dream destination for seekers of spirituality and Shangri-La, the sacred region is the birthplace of the Sakyamuni Buddha at Lumbini and Tibetan refugee settlements dating as back as the Chinese invasion in the 1950s.
A backpacker paradise since the 1960s, Nepal now attracts tourists in droves to its magnificent, unspoiled lands and unique ecosystems, adding to the crowds heading to Everest’s base camp along the perilous mountain ranges.
Its capital, Kathmandu, is a hive of traditional homes, the Royal palace and innumerable Buddhist cathedrals. Pokhara is the main tourist center here to many of the country’s attractions and has an interesting Old Town.
The country’s population is a mix of traditional tribes from northern India, Tibet, and the mountain regions scattered across nine dramatically distinct topographical areas.
The official language is augmented by many local languages, and English is common mostly in the capital and the tourist town of Pokhara.
Whatever their origin, the Nepali people are friendly, warm and hospitable.
The country is still an inexpensive, unpretentious destination in all aspects including accommodation, although top luxury hotels offering a range of creature comforts are becoming more and more common.
Dependent on your base, day-trips to nearby attractions are easily arranged by hiring a RocApply Rental Car and driver or contacting a local tour office.
In the more remote regions, there may be no public transport at all, although temples and sites can often be reached on foot by simply walking instead of trekking or hiking.
Birders will enjoy every minute of it, with a plethora of rare species including the golden eagle and many other species. In the north, traveling is made tricky by the mountainous trails, with few metal roads and rapidly transforming weather conditions.
For foreigners in love with natural beauty and ancient heritage, Nepal is the perfect place, although getting to see all of its splendor can be somewhat of a challenge.
Smaller aircraft now link most of the main towns, but the scenery is best explored from the ground with the exception of the Himalayas. Micro-buses are common and easy to use, but local buses are confusing and transport livestock along with locals.
Tour buses are a convenient and slightly safer option that connects Pokhara to other cities.

Landlocked, lacking substantial resources for economic growth, and hampered by an inadequate transportation network, Nepal is one of the least developed nations in the world. The economy is heavily dependent on imports of basic resources and foreign markets for its forest and agricultural produce.
The county’s imports are essential commodities, such as fuel, construction materials, fertilizers, metals, and most consumer goods, and exports such products as rice, jute, timber, and textiles.
The political and administrative system of the country has not made those changes in trade, investment, and related economic policies that would expedite economic development and attract foreign capital.
The government’s development programs and strategies, which are funded by foreign aid, also have failed to respond directly to the needs of rural people. Nepal’s mineral resources are small, scattered, and barely developed.
There are known deposits of coal, iron ore, magnesite, copper, cobalt, pyrite used for making sulfuric acid, limestone, and mica. Nepal’s great river systems give immense potential for hydroelectric development.
If developed and utilized within the country and exported to India the principal market for power generated in Nepal, it could become a mainstay of the country’s economy. Agriculture here primarily the cultivation of rice, corn (maize), and wheat engages most of Nepal’s population and accounts for well over half of the country’s export earnings.
Yet agricultural productivity is quite very low. The low yields result from shortages of fertilizers and improved seed and the use of inefficient strategies.
Because only a tiny percentage of Nepal’s cultivated land area is under irrigation, output depends upon the vagaries of the weather. Potatoes, sugarcane, and millet are other main crops. Cattle, buffalo, goats, and sheep are the principal livestock raised.
On the whole, Nepal has a small surplus in food grains. There are, however, major dislocations in supply and demand. Periods of deficit between harvests of various crops occur in the mountain areas.
At the same time, substantial amounts of food grain are transitioned to India from the Tarai. Because of the lack of adequate transportation, surplus food grain from the Tarai does not move north into the food deficit areas of the mid-mountain region.
Other industries include brick and tile manufacture, processing of construction materials, paper, and food grain, cigarette manufacture, cement production; and brewing of beer.
In general, there are more industrial enterprises in the private than in the public sector, although most of these are cottage industries. The main areas of manufacturing concentration are Biratnagar, the Birganj–Hitaura corridor, and the Kathmandu Valley.
