Junior secondary education or middle school is a part of basic education in Eritrea. It spans from grades 6 to 8. There are 4 years of senior Secondary education in Eritrea, encompassing grades 9 to 12. Students who have been successful in the basic examination at the end of grade 8 will have the option to proceed to secondary education.

Senior secondary education lasts for 4 years and caters to children aged 15 to 19 years, from grades 9 to 12. It is divided into 2 streams, namely science and social science or commerce. Students will study compulsory subjects such as Maths and English, at least 3 subjects will be chosen from the list including Agriculture, biology, bookkeeping, chemistry, social science, general knowledge, general science, geography, history, and physics.
Secondary Education in Eritrea is structured into a four-year program of core and enrichment learning areas, and is designed to serve both as preparation for further education and the work environment. upon completion of their Secondary Education, school-leavers have the option to seek employment or to pursue education and training.
At the end of the secondary cycle, students will sit for the Eritrean Secondary Education Certificate Examination (ESECE), which will enable them to enroll in university or tertiary education. Besides the core learning areas of the curriculum, students can choose co-circular activities including Health, Debating, Arts and Sciences, Drama, and Sports clubs, to mention but a few. Co-circular activities complement and strengthen learning and contribute towards the physical, social and intellectual, and affective development of the students.
